Hint: to place an image at the top of your blog (below the title and description but above the posts) put the image code right above the following tag in your template:

<!-- Main Column --> That way the image will always be front and center on your blog, like the train station wall on my blog.

Cruise on over to (Clever Title) and check out the show-stopping style.

COMM 101 (Performance) Assignment Clarification:
In your analysis of the personal ad (due by class time tomorrow) you should focus on ethos. Out of all of the possible things that a person could say about him- or herself, why these specific things? What sort of character does he or she construct? And what sort of audience? Also, pay attention to any antitheses and to the specificity of the language.

For the daring!
Wanna trick out your blog? Read on. Morgan asked how to change colors for text, background, etc. Here's how. Open up your template and look for the lines of html code that specify color (at the top of the template). They all have the word "color" in them so they're easy to find. You should be able to figure out which lines control the color for what. For example, here's a line that controls the color that links will appear in a blog:

a:link{color:#006400;text-decoration:underline;}Notice the giveaway here is the word "link" and "color." Dig? Yes, #006400 is the number of a web color. The whole palette of web colors with corresponding codes can be found here. Have fun! But remember to "Preview" before you "Save." If you don't like what you see then "Clear Edits."

COMM 228 (Performance) Assignments

# 1, Due: Wednesday, Feb. 11

Pick a radio show from This American Life. Listen to an entire program. Then pick two episodes in the program and offer a brief synopsis for us on your blog. Then outline them like we did in class. Use your own system of outlining but pay attention to the following:
1) The alternation of anecdote and reflection.
2) How transitions occur, including with music and silence.
3) How music is used to create a setting or mood and reinforce drama or humor.
4) How silence is used.
5) What the characters or interviewees learn (or how they change) in the course of the story.
6) Memorable lines.

# 2, Due: Monday, Feb. 9

Set up a new blog for your group. One group member should get the blog online and then send invitations to the other group members to join the blog. This can be done by navigating to Settings/Members. Other group members will receive an email with a link to join. The founding member must then go back to Settings/Members and grant administrative access to all group members after they have signed up.
The group blog will be a place to list group resources, such as computers, audio applications, recording equipment, roles of each member, project and progress. I will explain tomorrow in class.

# 3, Due: Monday, Feb. 9

For Monday record a brief audio interview to your blog on the topic of fashion at Denison. You may interview one or more people. Have fun with it. You may use a regular phone or mobile phone. Use Audblog.

COMM 101 (Public Speaking) Assignment:
For Monday set up a new blog with your group. One group member should get the blog online and then send invitations to the other group members to join the blog. This can be done by navigating to Settings/Members. Other group members will receive an email with a link to join. The founding member must then go back to Settings/Members and grant administrative access to all group members after they have signed up. Then copy & paste the text of President Bush's State of the Union Address into a post in the new group blog. Each group will be responsible for scanning Bush's speech for several rhetorical figures. I will explain tomorrow in class.

COMM 101 (Performance) Assignments:
For Friday (tomorrow) post a paragraph in your blog analyzing a personal ad from Nerve. You won't be able to link to the ad because they don't have static addresses. But you should copy & paste at least some of the language from the ad into your analysis. See my post below for a great example.

Scott's blizzog is fast becoming one of my favorite daily reads, and I mean out of all the blogs I read, not just student ones.
His analysis of a personal ad sets the standard for brutal insight.

One of the truly amazing things about the Denison community is just how well white students are liked by the few black students on campus, like these folks.
