Baseball fans:
baseballprimer a site for the "thinking fan."
Better yet, just subscribe to the newsfeed.

Some interesting reading on blogs and the future of journalism. Yo Seth, read some of this and blog about what you think of it or I'll fail you. Yes that means you--I only have one Seth this semester. ;)
"Excerpts from a discussion on the changing nature of journalism led by Dan Gillmor, Jay Rosen and Jeff Jarvis, clearly among the top minds on the subject. Via Tim Porter's First Draft." [Hypergene MediaBlog]
"Will Weblogs Make Copy Editors Obsolete?; RSS: A Big Success In Danger of Failure; News Aggregators Getting New Features; Interview with James Atkinson, Founder of phpBB; Blogging is not a zero-sum game; and The Semantic Social Network." [Hypergene MediaBlog]

From what I can tell Feedster allows you to set up a free web-based newsbrowser. Wish I had known about this earlier. Should be good for those of you who don't have a computer that will handle Central, Newzcrawler, etc.
In fact, just go to the Feedster homepage and check out everything it does. It's like Technorati on roids! I'm adding it to my "stuff" column.

Alright cowboys and cowgirls, several of you have been blogging on current political news--I love it. And several conservative students have spoken up; keep it coming--it's no good if we only hear one side, eh? So you've got the blog thing down. Cool. Now it's time to syndicate your political commentary beyond the class to the world at large. When you're ready for a much larger readership, go here. And you guys know my opinion about this: Radical democracy of the press baby! I would just as soon read what you guys have to say about the world as I would what the corporate talking heads have to say about it.

Here's a link to a Forbes piece on the future of news feeds. You guys are ahead of the curve (thanks to me, heh, heh).
'Arik Hesseldahl (Forbes.com): "... 2004, it seems, is the year the RSS feed--the letters stand for real simple syndication or rich site summary--is going mainstream."'

This is just too good.

THIS IS A MUST READ. Check out the Georgetown Lampoon and read this stuff. It was on an away message of a guy I went to high school with. So Bill Shufelt, thanks for putting that out there, because this shit is classic. Especially this line..."Get some rich parents, an internship, and a pink polo with the collar up, and then maybe I'll let you hang out with me." Dr. Gilbert even liked it. (But of course he would.)
I think its pretty awesome that a university like Georgetown, which is under jesuit rule, has a student publication that allows this kind of content. I mean let's be serious, this blow the BULLSHEET right out of the water.
Its definitely a good laugh, enjoy.

I too have a fondness both for the Beats and for the Dead, without whom my own college days would not have been as dear.

One of my favorite authors is Ken Kesey, author of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest." He died a couple years ago, but the legend of him and the Merry Pranksters lives on. This is my favorite story about him, and it combines him and the best band on earth, the Grateful Dead.... enjoy.

If any of ya'll need to send a larger file to me (something too big for email, like audio files) you can drop it onto my iDisk. If you want to share a larger file with the class you can drop it on here and then blog about it to let everyone know. Here's how. If you have Mac OS X or Windows XP go here and download the free iDisk Utility. My .Mac membername is "dave7" and the password is "gilbie." Here are instructions if you don't have a Mac or XP.

If you're using Windows XP, use iDisk Utility for Windows XP to open someone's Public folder. To download iDisk Utility for Windows XP, go to www.mac.com, and click .Mac Downloads.
If you're using Windows 2000, open My Computer, choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu, then click "Web folder or FTP site." Enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public? (where "membername" is the other person's .Mac member name).
If you're using Windows 98, open My Computer, double-click the Web Folders icon, then double-click Add Web Folder. Enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public? (where "membername" is the other person's .Mac member name).

Many of you are doing great work on your SJT maps. I just wanted to show you guys this one because it's so thorough, and the links are so good. Overall I'm happy with how all the groups are progressing with this assignment.
